Time to Sing a New Song!

I don't know about you, but I am an active discoverer of new music! There is something so exciting about searching for new artists or uncovering an OG artists' new gem!

Now, I'd like to start with defining what I mean by "new music". New music doesn't necessarily mean the most recently released music; it means a song/hymn, EP, or album that is new and fresh for the current season you or the body of Christ is in. I say this because there have been times when an old song, by date, is revived and the anointing on it is fresh, while a more current song is just played out. There have been times when a new artist or song is discovered by someone and even their older songs are new to the discoverer. New music is freshly, anointed music for its season. This is what I believe the psalmist, David, meant when he said,

Oh sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth! (ESV)

beginning in Psalm 96:1 and repeating the phrase "sing to the Lord a new song" in Psalm 98:1; Psalm 144:9; and declared again by the prophet Isaiah in chapter 42 verse 9 of his book. The word "new" in Psalm 96:1 is a Hebrew word meaning new, new thing, or fresh (H2319 hadas). A fresh anointing is important in this Christian Walk because we do not want our hearts to become hardened by the complacency we may fall into as a result of the same-old, mundane routine as it pertains to our faith: go to church, say a few prayers, read a few lines of the bible, and repeat. Sometimes we need a new song of praise and worship to our King to make the Word come alive to us again, to get us through a dry spell in our walk, or to deliver us from some kind of oppression.

What is it about singing and songs that is so important to this Christian lifestyle?

Exhibit A:

I'm not an expert by any means on the exact science of the benefits of singing, but you can find plenty of sources online that assert that singing does, in fact, enhance our health and well-being. Singing has been a proven source of joy as it relieves stress, releases endorphins (the "happy" hormones), improves lung capacity, improves memory, boots confidence, among other things. Pair this with the beautiful message of the gospel and Godly principles and you'll have a joy that goes down so deep that negative circumstances or even the enemy cannot steal it from you!

Exhibit B:

Songs are so important as well! Songs are comprised of not only the instrumental music, but also the lyrics. Humor me, please, and evaluate whether you are the type of that listens to the music for the beat or for the lyrics. If you are someone who doesn't pay much attention to the words of songs, I admonish you to become more aware of the message you're consuming every time you sing them. Words are powerful, as scripture tells us (Proverbs 18:21) and the message through the music is ultimately the part your mind meditates on and, as a result, your behavior models. I challenge you, today, to examine the lyrics of the songs you sing along to and determine if it's a message you want to align yourself with!

As we come to the end of this post, I want to leave you with some tips about song-selecting and songwriting, as well as calls to action.

Tips:

  1. Songs are a way to meditate (pertaining to meditation on the Bible and not any other form in this case), so choosing songs with lyrics that are traceable back to scripture or biblical principles will enhance your understanding and memorization of scripture. In the same way, you can write your own songs using scripture as your template (this is how I write songs!)

  2. Songs are a tool to reach people. Think about the experiences you or other people may be going through and choose to listen to and write songs that give the uplifting message the listener would need to hear.

  3. Songs are a weapon to push back the enemy. Songs offered up to God stirs up His strength within as His truth is declared outload. This is fighting from a place of victory!

Ask yourself: Are you consuming to the right message? Do the songs you listen to encourage you in your walk with Jesus? If not, and even if so, feel free to add my songs to your playlists for fresh, uplifting truth over beautiful melodies and sing a new song! https://linktr.ee/taylorjanell_music
